The podcast is the culmination of years of research by Smale into the history of the facility and the trust he built with its survivors, and the story is told with sensitivity and care throughout: the most touching aspect of the story is Smale’s focus on two childhood friends, Rangi Wickliffe and Tyrone Marks, who share the ways in which they used humour and companionship to survive their ordeals. Researched, written and narrated by Aaron Smale, and produced by Melody Thomas and Kirsten Johnstone, the seven-part series looks at the abuse of children by both patients and staff at the facility, the lead psychiatrist Dr Selwyn Leeks (now 92 and living in Melbourne) and the allegations against him, as well as the failures of successive governments to properly investigate the abuse and seek justice for the facility’s victims (in 2019, New Zealand was found in breach of the UN Convention against Torture for its failure to investigate). This vital new podcast from Stuff and Popsock Media delves into a dark period of New Zealand’s history, shining a light on the atrocities and abuse that occurred at the Lake Alice psychiatric facility in Rangitīkei in the 1970s.
